Change in board members

We are sad to announce that our well respected board member Mariette Büthker is going to leave MPC. Mariette has been on our board since the start and we will miss her and we thank her for everything she has done for MPC.
On the bright side, we are very pleased to announce our new board member Boris Janssen, with whom some of us have worked with in the past and we are very pleased that he has joined our team. MPC will gain a lot from his enthusiasm and extensive experience in the charity and management field.
We will elaborate on this subject in our next newsletter.

Two Barbary macaques seized in Melilla

Melilla, Spain, 23 December. The Civil Guard has rescued 2 Barbary macaques which were abandoned in Melilla. The 2 animals were most likely smuggled from Morocco into the Spanish enclave on Moroccan territory. The two animals were abandoned and kept in poor circumstances. One of the two monkeys was found on the street tied to a traffic light, while the other was found in a hostel, abandoned by the owner. As it is illegal to keep Barbary macaques under Spanish law, the ex owners most likely were afraid to be caught by the authorities. Reaching the Spanish mainland from Morocco requires a passage through 2 custom points so this is probably why the macaques were abandoned.
