Actions that MPC has undertaken since 2003



MPC has worked on the protection of the Barbary macaque since 2003 and has been involved in, has coordinated or initiated the following projects/ actions:

* 2003/ 2004: Research on the illegal trade in Barbary macaques - Thesis Oxford Brookes University (van Lavieren, 2004)  (Institut Scientifique/ AAP)

* 2005: Research on the wild population in the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco funded by AAP  - 8 months - (Oryx, van Lavieren, 2008) (Institut Scientifique/ AAP)

* 2006: Lobby work with the Moroccan government (IUCN)

* 2007: Organisation of a seminar with experts to create an action plan - (IUCN + AAP)

* 2007/ 2010/ 2011: Educational programme in the ports of Tanger (2007) and Algeciras/ Tarifa (2010 / 2011) to inform visitors to Morocco on the way to the ferry about the risks and illegality of buying wildlife and in particular Barbary macaques (DEPANA, AAP, BMCRif, Barcelona Zoo)

* 2007: CITES training of the Spanish customs (AAP)

* 2007/ 2008: Assessment of the Barbary macaque on the Red List resulting in the shift to status Endangered

* 2009: CITES training of the Moroccan customs (SSN/ WWF)

* 2007/ 2010 writing uplisting proposals from CITES App II to App I - trying to lobby for an uplisting at the CITES CoP's

* 2008: Workshop "green" Moroccan NGO's + National Park staff (WWF/ GEA/ Institut Scientifique)

* 2009: Workshop students Mohammed V university field training ( WWF/ GEA/ Institut Scientifique)

* Lobbying for the creation of a rescue center in Morocco - since 2005

* Working together with local people to fight poachers

* 2010: research on the illegal trade in the north of Morocco (report found in downloads)

* 2011 - research on the wild population densities in Ifrane National Park and degradation of the forest (unpublished)

* Working together with Roehampton University & University of Lincoln (UK)

* 2012: Educational school programme in habitat areas (Azrou and Ouzoud)

* 2011: Organisation and creation and coordination of a national conservation action plan for the Barbary     macaque in Azrou with experts
